One of Canada’s top golfers is visiting Calgary this week to launch a craft beer.
Pro golfer Graham DeLaet, a member of the PGA tour since 2010, teamed up with Bomber Brewing to create Prairie Baard.
The beer is a golden ale, made using 70 per cent Saskatchewan barley and 30 per cent Saskatchewan wheat, both of which are malted in Biggar, Sask.

“I’m a beer drinker… a lot of golfers are doing wines, but I don’t think anyone’s going to buy wine from a kid from Weyburn, Saskatchewan,” DeLaet joked. “More than anything it’s a passion of mine.”
DeLaet explained the name of the bear is a tribute to his iconic facial hair and also his European heritage, as “baard” is Dutch for “beard.”
“It’s a wheat beer; it’s fairly light in colour, maybe a little darker than a pilsner lager,” DeLaet explained. “It’s got a nice hoppy citrus kind of flavour, especially at the end.”
“Hopefully down the line we can venture out into some different flavours.”
Prairie Baard will be available at various locations throughout Alberta, including Sobeys, Safeway Co-op and Liqour Depot.
“The response has been pretty good. We were in Saskatoon doing a launch yesterday and a lot of people came out for it.”
DeLaet will be visiting the Royal Oak Sobeys in the 8000 block of Country Hills Blvd. N.W. on Thursday from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. for an official launch of the beer.
