Saskatoon businesses were forced to close early on Thursday morning after a power outage left thousands in the dark in the city’s downtown core. The outage affected Saskatoon Light & Power customers located downtown between Idylwyld Drive and 2nd Ave from 18th Street to 24th Street.

Midtown Plaza, Scotia Centre, Galaxy Theatre and TCU Place were among some of the many businesses without power.

The City of Saskatoon says power was knocked out at 11:50 a.m. CT by road construction work hitting an underground power network.

The city said they were working to isolate the problem and hope to have power restored between 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.

A number of businesses have indicated on social media that they will remain closed for the rest of the day and employees at Midtown Plaza have reached out to Global News and said they have been sent home.
